"Chuy" is a Filipino-Bisayan colloquial term pertaining to a beautiful and or cute... All about "laag-laag" (travel), photography, feasts and festivals, journey, reflections among others "In every journey, there are many stories to tell... beautiful stories. Even in rugged struggles, there are lessons can be learned, needed to be learned, needed to embrace. That's what makes life Chuy, simply Chuy."

Street showdown performance at the market area showing their dancing skills and flashy costumes |
Lucky me that I witnessed the First Street Dance Showdown Competition
during the fifth year celebration of Suman Festival in Clarin. Sea of flashy colors flooded along the streets and highways mostly anticipated from every corners of the town. Visitors from other places joined the very festive activity. This is another
breakthrough of envisioning "Uswag Clarin!" Indeed, a newfangled
milestone among the townspeople of Clarin on their most (in so far) celebrated Suman Festival. A great success yet a step towards progress and economic development. Parallel to the Town's annual
fiesta in honor of Senior Santo NiƱo on January 15, the Local Government Unit
(LGU) blastoff its "First" Suman Street Dance showdown just this
January 5.
True Sisters from Poblacion 2, my cousins |
In
different colors, all the 29 barangays of the said town participated and
paraded on streets wearing their traditional yet unique Subanen tribe costumes
and vied to compete for the fifty thousand pesos (PHP 50, 000.00) prize plus
trophy (not bad) presenting their street dance and the concept-dance showdown
on the open field.
The
luminous shades and glitzy hues props add festivity to the eyes among many
spectators. Also other handheld props and struts like hand-crafted bukag
(large baskets) made of coconut palms, nigo
(winnower), pay-pay (fan), palaspas (palms), bamboo
sticks, banana leaves, and etcetera brought uniqueness and distinctiveness relevant to the
theme and concepts of the said festival.
What's
interesting about the dance's showdown is the choreography itself. Though free
interpretations, the concepts must based should on the five official dance
steps inspired from the process of making the "Suman" product
incorporated with five basic fundamental steps of Subanen tribe. The
competing contingents must exhibit and demonstrate creative dance steps of how "Suman" the
One Town One Product Champion influence the way-of-life among the Clarinian
folks.
The Queens of Suman Festival 2014
"Faces of Queens with beauty, grace and confidence" The Beauty that is Number 9 was proclaimed winner as the First Suman Festival Queen of 2014 |
It is said that a festival without a queen is not a festival
at all. A category that every contingent selects their owned ideal lady to
represent their respective barangay to contest the title as Suman Festival
Queen of 2014. It was indeed a showdown of bevy of beauties with poise and grace
demonstrating their dancing and communicative skills as required. The queen from
Barangay Canicapan bested all 28 ladies and was crowned.

January 15 is the Town's Fiesta in Honor of Senior Santo Nino. The Suman House Center is under renovation re-modelling the architectural design in order to attract more visitors as well as to render a good quality service to all "pasalubong" buyers and stop-over customers. Even so, the center is still "at your service" selling suman favorites and other food products of you choice. It is located near the reconstructed establishment. On the other note, the said center is now producing new variety of flavors that would certainly bring crave of excitement to all Suman aficionados. Come and Visit! More Suman in Clarin! It's more fun in the Philippines!
