(Special Edition) REMEMBERING NELSON MANDELA: A Peacemaker

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918-2013)

Nelson Mandela maybe lost the fight of his own battle but his immense legacy remained champion and exultant in the hearts of his nation whom love him and believe in him so dearly. Known as South Africa’s “Father” bid his children goodbye but healed, transformed and reconciled nation from long years of pain in separateness.
With much admiration of the world, the iconic man of truth and peace undeniably love his people, his children. As he fought for freedom, justice, equal rights and equal opportunity for his impoverished struggling people, his voice transcends beyond ears, more than combat weapons bringing down apartheid bloodless. The abundance of opportunity that South Africans enjoying up to now and ahead is because of Mandela’s dream, vision and unconditional love to his people.

But known to everyone that he was long-fighting on his deteriorating health and recuperating his strength, we witness his will to survive to go back on his feet - an iron-willed man, indeed. But when Mandela struck the world of his demise, millions of people bereft of with sad tears and heart-breaking frustrations.

Why is my heart crying for this man? I don’t have any exact reason. Neither I never meet Nelson Mandela nor do I know this man in person. Who am I to claim such thing? He is not even my countrymen. But all I know, Mandela is a man of peace by great example, a peacemaker in the truest sense.

The death of a peacemaker like Mandela flashed back my inner thoughts.

Years I was once devoted to working for peace in the grassroots community in my country (Philippines). My involvement and participation was a great learning experience which shed me light and gave me hope that true peace and justice is possible to achieve in a place that were already clouded with doubts and fears. The struggle is unheard for more than 300 hundred years in history yet still exist. Working with my fellows of different culture and affiliation, it’s good to realize though that we seek the same perspective of reaching out people and touching people’s lives with love, respect and understanding regardless of beliefs. But it’s disheartening. The longer we gave effort, peace seems hard to grasp and just easily slip away on our hands… And I gave up pursuing that purpose. Finding inner peace lead me to separate from their ways…

Nelson Mandela is no ordinary man. Courage leads him victorious. Just imagining his achievement in bringing peace to his pride country makes me wonder of how he did that.  No superlative word can describe how amazing and remarkable being he really is. Indeed, the man of steel of strong values and principles; “giving-up” was never an option neither.  Truly an inspiration! And I admire Mandela on that.

And I have these thoughts that his commanding presence reserved with the abundance of simplicity, humility, honesty, service, care and love defined of what true leadership is all about. He lives on it, he personified! That was evident. Now, millions of people were mourning of his passing with heavy hearts.

“Madiba”, as his clan calls him, is forever remembered, love and respected. His memories and legacy lives on in the hearts of every South African citizens and the world. A Hero!
Let's celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, a dignified man of compassion, humanity and peace!
